The flame of the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games will be lit in Greece next month on Oct. 3 and will begin its domestic relay. “The flame will be lit at the Panathinaikos Stadium in Athens, Greece, where the first Olympic Games were held,” the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Games Organizing Committee said on Oct. 27.The lighting ceremony will be attended by Organizing Committee President Jin Jong-oh, Greek Olympic Committee President Spyros Kapralos and Greek citizens, and the flame will be handed over to the organizing committee after a relay and lamp lighting. Women’s freestyle skier Yoon Shin-young (Bong Pyeong Go) and men’s singles figure skater Kim Hyun-gyeom (Han AD) will participate as torch relay runners .The torch will arrive at Incheon International Airport on March 8 and a torch arrival ceremony will be held on site .The torch will then be flagged off at Seoul Plaza to begin its 80-day, 23-city torch tour .The remaining 20 days of the torch tour will be dedicated to the Special Torch Tour, which will visit the underprivileged in the four host cities (Gangneung, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, and Hwaseong).The theme of the Gangwon 2024 Torch Tour is “Youth with dreams and passions, united by sports, embark on a torch tour journey towards a brilliant future” and the motto is “Journey of Solidarity “.Unlike the adult Olympic torch relay, the Gangwon 2024 Torch Tour will not involve a relay of runners on roads .Instead, the torch will be lit by torchbearers in 18 provinces, including Seoul, Busan, Sejong, Jeju, Gwangju and Gangwon.Of the 109 torchbearers, 82 are youths, and programs such as the Olympic Games Experience and the Olympic OX Quiz will be held for participants before the torch lighting ceremony to showcase the unique features of the Youth Olympic Games.
