Ronaldo was asked about Amorim’s arrival at United after Portugal’s 5-1 win over Poland on Friday and said: ‘I wish him the best of luck.

He’s the kind of manager United really need,’ he said.

There were also claims that Ronaldo and his teammates called Amorim a ‘poet’ during the Portugal squad call-up. In response, Amorim said: ‘That’s right. Ronaldo, meanwhile, declared after the Poland game that he has ‘only two years left until retirement’. ‘I’m enjoying myself. I am planning my retirement from football, I don’t know if it will be in one year or two years. I’m enjoying it,’ he said emphatically. ‘I wake up, I go to training, I play with motivation. If I didn’t feel like that, I would say it’s not for me anymore. I don’t feel that way yet,’ he said. ‘Do I want to score 1,000 goals? Of course I want to, but I don’t think about that. I think about one game at a time. I’ll be 40 in three months,’ he said, adding: ’I’ve always played with time on my side. My favourite thing is to play for the Portuguese national team. I really enjoy coming to the national team. It helps to score goals,’ he smiled.
