North Korea’s diving team returns to the international stage

The North Korean swimming team, which returned to the World Aquatics Championships after 7 years, ranked 7th in its first competition, the diving mixed team competition.

North Korea ranked 7th out of 12 participating countries with a total of 320.85 points in the diving mixed team competition at the 2024 International Aquatics Federation World Aquatics Championships held at the Hamad Aquatic Center in Doha, Qatar on the 2nd (Korean time).

This event consists of a team of 4 people, 2 each for men and women, and involves a 3m springboard and a 10m platform dive.

North Korea, which sent five athletes to this competition’s diving competition, had four athletes, Ko Je-won, Lim Young-myeong, Cho Jin-mi, and Kim Hee-yeon, participate in the mixed team competition.

Kim Mi-rae, the only woman in the North Korean team who has experience participating in world championships, did not participate.

Mirae Kim won a silver medal in the women’s 10m platform diving and a bronze medal in the 10m mixed synchro diving at the 2017 Budapest World Championships.

At that time, it was the last World Aquatics Championships that North Korea participated in before this competition.

North Korea refused to participate in the next competition, the 2019 Gwangju Games, and was unable to participate in the 2022 Budapest Games due to disciplinary action by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for not participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The North Korean athletes, who were unable to participate in international competitions until 2022 due to IOC disciplinary action, did not even participate in the 2023 Fukuoka Games when the disciplinary action was lifted.

North Korea, a diving powerhouse, has won all four medals (1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze) at previous world championships in diving.

Meanwhile, in the mixed team diving competition, Great Britain won with a total of 421.65 points, becoming the first gold medalist of this competition.

Mexico won the silver medal with 412.80 points, and Australia won the bronze medal with 385.35 points. 섯다
